The diversity of different ecosystems is undoubtedly the biggest asset of the Grotenhout forest. This allows for the discovery of different tree, plant and animal species. Eight different bat species live here, along with roe deer, hares and foxes. The pond is a popular spot for butterflies, dragonflies and breeding birds such as the honey buzzard, chiffchaff and black woodpecker. The plant list is also impressive: 360 different plant species have been discovered. So keep your eyes and ears open during a trip through this wonderful living world.

The Grotenhout is accessible via three official entrances. There are two entrances on the side of Gierle, namely at Schoorstraat and Rooien. The third entrance, where there is also parking, is located at the bridge over the E34 in Vosselaar.

The nearest stop is 'Gierle Rooien'. From there it is only a few minutes walk to the entrance at Schoorstraat. Bus 212 Turnhout - Herentals passes this stop.
By bike
The Grotenhout serves as a connecting route between two nodes, 70 and 75, of the cycling network.
History
The Grotenhout forest is one of the few old forests with some size in the Kempen and has a rich history. The Grotenhout has been part of the Land of Turnhout since its inception in 1356, so the lords of Turnhout decided on its management. Philip the Good added the domain to his list of free forests in 1430: the most important hunting domains of the lord. These free forests enjoyed his special protection. Until the end of the 17th century, hunting was the main function in the Grotenhout with roe deer and wild boar as the main big game. In the 18th century, this changed when the important noble families focused more on timber production.
